CANCER AND “BAD LUCK”? ABSOLUTE B.S.
While this page is devoted to oxidation/ozone therapy, I want to take this opportunity to step back into my general journalism role to discuss the recent report in Science Magazine regarding “bad luck” and cancer. (And, depending on your “comments”, “shares” and “likes”, I’ll consider continuing the general medicine commentary here or at another site.) I will continue with the ozone/Ebola story here as the saga in Sierra Leone unfolds.
While the media ignores our Ebola work, it has catapulted a ridiculous study (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/347/6217/78) into stardom, a study I feel compelled to address to you.
The findings of the study are that tissues with high rates of inherent stem cell division have higher rates of cancer due to the “random” mutations in said cell divisions. Hence, the spin on this is that you develop cancer due to higher levels of “random mutations” in tissues that have high rates of cell division, during which, logic tells us, DNA mutations can occur.
I’m like Mr. Spock of Star Trek when it comes to logic in medicine. While the pundits are now divesting you of fruits of your lifestyle/behavior by telling you your cancer is simply the result of “bad luck” in how the DNA of your cells divides, let’s look at facts. In 1900, the rate of women’s breast cancer was about 1:40. Today, it’s about 1:8 or even 1:7. In Europe, colorectal cancer rates rose from 23/100,000 in 1975 to 34/100,000 in 2004. Now if it were simply “bad luck” why would cancer have skyrocketed over time? Logic says that the people generations back should have the same “bad luck” that we would today. That is, unless “bad luck” might be caused by some other factors besides “bad luck”.
So, let’s turn to more logic. If cancer “bad luck’ mutations were simply due to rates of cell division, blood cancers should be the leading cause of cancer death. Why? Your blood cells have the highest rates of cell division. Hmmm. seems to be a flaw in the conclusions here. Men should have their testicles rotting away. Why? Male gonads have continuous and massive cell division for sperm production throughout life (though declining with age). Skin cancer shouldn’t be a function of solar damage. You should simply get it “randomly” due to continuous skin cell division.
Yes, it’s true that more rapidly dividing tissues have a higher rate of cancer “generally”. And I agree that cell division makes your DNA more vulnerable to damage. But let’s turn to logic again. If you don’t get exposed to the flu virus, you won’t get the flu. Same with polio. The more hours you drive, the more chances you have to crash. But, if you drink, if your car is not maintained well, if parts are rusting out, your chances may skyrocket. In the case of rapidly dividing tissues, these vulnerable processes may be far more vulnerable to the exploding levels of environmental toxins, and the decrepit Standard American Diet (SAD) with gross deficiencies of essential nutrients (or heat altered molecules) as the REAL CAUSE of the “bad luck” mutations.
Once again the pundits don’t see the forest for the trees. Yes, rapidly dividing organs are more likely to get cancer “in general”. But while the pundits stop there, I encourage my Facebook community to use logic in analyzing what the pundits are now trying to spoon-feed you. Pour enough toxins into your body and those rapidly dividing tissues will certainly be more likely to develop genetic changes.
Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize some 80 years ago for his discovery that cells deprived of oxygen metabolism would turn cancerous. That’s not bad luck. The cells had to suffer an insult, not random “bad luck”!
Finally, mutations, in my opinion, are NOT the cause of cancer. Cancer is an epigenetic phenomenon. Epigenetics means the impact of environment on DNA EXPRESSION. Rather than an actual DNA break, science is pointing to what chemicals do to your DNA switches. Logic dictates that rapidly dividing tissues might be more vulnerable to some toxin causing the “division switch” to get stuck in the “on” position. And that toxins might cause the apoptosis gene to get stuck in the “off” position. (Apoptosis is the process by which abnormal cells commit “suicide” to protect the larger organism.)
I am a clinician, not a “scientist”. However, one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that if the rocket is aimed in the wrong direction, or misbalanced, or, that its fuel mixture (nutrition) is faulty, it won’t get where you want it to go. If your diet is moving in the wrong direction, or toxins weighing you down and misbalancing you, you can be sure that you won’t get your body to the state of health where you want to be.
Logic concludes that the “bad luck” of cancer is your “bad luck” in exposure to toxins, and your “bad choices” in what you put (or do not put) into your body. A more “human friendly” government and economic engine than “corporate profit friendly” system we currently endure could modulate that “bad luck” to your favor!

Please join me in prayer that all bars to ozone therapy for Ebola in Sierra Leone will now melt away and that those in charge will give it the full, open and fair opportunity it deserves to save lives and end the crisis.
