Imagine what it would be like to never worry about obesity … or even being heavy? Imagine having a terrible disease, such as arthritis, bowel disturbances, asthma, chronic fatigue, and even juvenile diabetes, and seeing it disappear! And imagine having the youth and vigor of someone 20 years younger than you. Think its impossible?
Its not!
Since taking the helm at Second Opinion, Ive gently stressed the importance of what I call the Living Foods Diet. I am a huge fan of this diet, not just because I live it every day. I am a huge fan because Ive watched the transformations in my patients. And Ive talked to scores of raw fooders who live healthy and have beaten serious disease just by eating this diet.
Many people think that eating raw food is just not possible for them. But I am here to tell you anyone can do it. Too many people think about the foods they cant eat. They rarely think about all the great foods theyll discover once their focus changes. And the tastes are magnificent.
To help you see just how great this diet it and how easy it is to do, my mentor and good friend Dr. Douglas Graham has written a fabulous book. Its called The 80-10-10 Diet.
The 80-10-10 Diet emphasizes a dietary content of 80% simple carbohydrates from fruit and vegetables. This provides sugar, our primary fuel. Another 10% comes from protein and 10% fat rounds out the diet.
The book presents extraordinary logic and science that is completely convincing. You will be captivated by his analysis of the differences in human physiology, physical structure, and origins in comparison to carnivores, grain eaters, and grass eaters. He weaves these truths with scientific facts that literally condemn a diet containing more than 20% calories from fat.
Human societies with the greatest longevity average no more than 17% fat. He dispels the medieval myth of the necessity of meat at all. And, he makes a clinching case for eating uncooked foods.
In the most understandable language, Dr. Graham lays out the fallacies of all the fad diets you have read about. Even the very popular metabolic typing diet that I wrote about years ago (and the blood-type diet that I shunned) is dispelled. Dr. Graham was responsible for me chucking these notions completely.
Do you think that a black bear in the Appalachians will eat different food than black bears in California simply because he has a different blood type?
Now go to the mirror and look at yourself undressed. Are you equipped to survive in cold temperate climates without bringing the tropics with you (heated homes and warm clothing)? I think not. Our origins are the tropics.
When we moved out, we were forced to consume food foreign to our metabolic needs. What is available to us in the tropics? Fruit first, then non-cellulose type vegetables. What were our ancestors eating 5,000 years ago? MacDonalds? Frozen or refrigerated food? Cooked food? Refined and processed food? Hardly. And 5,000 years is insufficient time for our digestive systems to change to a new food source.
I have to admit that seeing the improved performance of professional athletes coached by Dr. Graham sold me on the diet. And Ive experienced the same kind of improvement.
I am not the strongest person, I admit. My 5-9, 155-pound body is not hulking. But I have endurance beyond most people 20 years my junior. Last summer I trekked the high Sierras (40 miles) averaging 12,000 feet with a 50-pound pack. I even scaled Mt. Whitney (14,495 feet).
My cholesterol is 178. My blood pressure is 110/70, sometimes even lower. I can sustain my heart rate at 140 for an hour and much more. I have absolutely no fear of vascular disease or cancer. My protein, essential amino and fatty acids (blood testing) are all quite acceptable. Please understand this is not ego or bragging. Its eating and living in conformity with the laws of nature. Its merely reporting to you what such a diet can do for you, and I do not even follow it 100%. I average about 85% year round.
