The Surprising Way to Prevent and Reduce Back Pain

If you are over the age of 70 and want to avoid back pain, there is an easy way to do it. Get out and exercise.

That might be the opposite of what you thought. After all, many back problems arise from activity. But a new study says regular strenuous activity can significantly reduce your risk of getting low back pain.

In this study of 1,387 Danish twins aged between 70 and 100, activity was king. Strenuous activity reduced the risk of developing low back pain by 21%. Participants with the worst physical prowess had the best protection. The authors concluded that strenuous physical activity at least once a week is protective against low back pain in seniors.

Ive also told you how regular activity slows degenerative joint disease. Heres more proof. Activity strengthens the muscles surrounding the joints in your back, stabilizing them. It also promotes circulation to slow degeneration. So it can reduce your pain — or at least keep it from getting worse.

Do not be afraid of strenuous activity damaging your back. Its foolish activity or accidents that usually lead to problems.

I am not an exercise nut. However, I try to walk or garden every day. And I get a more strenuous workout twice a week. My workout is either mountain biking, hiking up a steep hill, or cross-country skiing. If you are older and have never mountain biked or cross country skied, do not take them up. They can be dangerous. Stick to non-impact activities. Hiking is awesome. It not only exercises you, it also gets you fresh air, and sunshine as well.
