You already know that I am a big fan of oral chelation therapy. Its a lot cheaper than intravenous chelation therapy. And its very effective. However, I have to admit that IV chelation therapy is still the gold standard for preventing heart attacks and other cardiovascular events. A new study shows why.
Chelating physicians reported on 220 consecutive patients with known vascular disease. The doctors treated the patients between 1992-2001 at nine outpatient centers in four countries. The average age of the patients was 64; 18.2% were smokers and 72.3% were males. The patients received an average of 58 IV sessions.
According to statistical data, you would expect 15 heart attacks and six deaths over a three-year follow-up. In this group, there were no deaths and no heart attacks. Four had strokes but recovered well. Two had angioplasties and six went on to have a bypass. These patients had a 93.6% reduced need for angioplasty and a nearly two-thirds reduced need for bypass. Almost 69% had complete resolution of their symptoms.
The only negative with IV chelation therapy is the cost. With the cost usually running between $90 to $150, these participants would have to pay $3,000 to $6,000 for this many treatments. However, its a lot less costly than any invasive procedure! One day, insurance companies may realize the value in paying for IV chelation therapy. But until they do, oral chelation is a reasonable (and effective) alternative.
